SOT Printer Expert Wanted

While setting up my new Canon printer I was a bit disconcerted to see it uses the same type and make of ribbon cable to the carts as the HP :(

They do all look the same. One end of the cable looks like a ZIF (zero insertion force scheme).

And part of this, is because HP bears no resemblance whatsoever, to the old HP. Agilent got the test equipment business and had all the high tech stuff in it.

In the computer business, you don't have to do any engineering to run a business. Four guys proved this by running an ATX power supply company, without a clear idea of how an ATX supply even works. All of their development was done via contracts.

What HP is doing there, is similar to what Western Digital did with Hitachi HGST (who in turn were IBM researchers). They acquired engineering talent. And the Samsung deal is a bit similar.

And that's how you tell what is really going on. You wait a couple years, and see how many of the "obvious" Samsung items disappear. That tells you whether they really wanted the products, or they actually needed some staff/skills.

My Samsung ML-1640 came with a counter chip which meant you had to replace the cartridge after 700 pages (according to the counter chip) had been printed. It was possible to refill the old cartridge with toner, but a couple of pins on the counter chip had to be bridged with a soldered link in order for that to succeed. That was much cheaper than a new cartridge, but the next driver update from Samsung prevented this working, whether the chip was shorted or not, so you had to buy a new cartridge. I was fortunate enough to read this before I updated.

That's not HP and not getting rid of old printers either and not a software update and not a problem either.

The way I see it, HP have taken-over the whole Samsung printer division, if you search for Samsung drivers or toner, you end-up on the HP website.

You will probably find that irrespective of the manufacturer they all use the same type of flexi cable.

Read further up thread and you'll see that HP = Samsung (post by me9 and replies). It wouldn't surprise me at all to find that HP have reused Samsung's commercial ideas to prevent use of anything but their own equipment being used. That's if they weren't already doing it with their own software.

Still nothing to do with getting rid of all old printers.

That has nothing to do with what was originally being discussed.
