"solid surfacing" worktops

Dec 16, 2006 1 Replies

Hi all

I noticed that Formica have "solid surfacing" kitchen worktops in their Axiom range. Does anyone have any experience of using or installing this type of worktop? I'm wondering if they can be installed using the same tools as for laminate worktops or if different techniques are needed..

thanks

Julian

I know a bit more about this now, having spoken to technical services at Formica. It seems that the installation techniques are similar to laminate, except that an extra step is required to reinforce the joints, involving cutting a horizontal groove and inserting a strip of reinforcing material. Also there is a polishing stage afterwards. So overall I'd say installation is not trivial. Also the worktops are

650mm, which means having to trim off a few cm all along the length which must be a pain (given the typical depth of floor units of 600mm or less)
