Not in my case. I normally charge at 7KW. There is at CT round the feed from the meter. If the current get excessive (perhaps the oven is on), the car charging stops.

the diversity should have been calculated properly, but using current transformers to measure how much "spare" current is available for car charging has been a thing long before smart chargers were mandatory

Mine, recently installed, does not monitor the household current, so would not know to back off, but could be set during installation for a lower maximum current.

When I upgraded my consumer unit, back in the '90s, the meter reader spotted the new CU and arranged for the 60A fuse, its housing and the meter tails to be upgraded for 100A, without me having to request anything and without charge. That seems to have been the case for a number of people that I have spoken too. No-one around here, other than those with very old installations, seems to still be on a 60A fuse.

My comment was not about export, it was in response to the previous posting referring to the average assumed load per household on a substation being thrown out by installing car chargers, taking high currents for hours on end.

My understanding is that you get paid a lot less when you send your own power than you pay for their power coming in.

Which implies the meter needs to be able to distinguish.

We had a related problem in one office.

There was only one control on the aircon. The floors that we were using were full of computers, and the other tenant was still mostly paper based.

They froze, and we baked.

(It was also one of those "sick buildings" you might have hear of. I learned that if I caught a cold take time off, because if I didn't it would turn into a chest infection. I have a suspicion it's caused slight permanent damage to my lungs)

Of course. The installers are going around sucking teeth saying 'I'm so sorry, that's not up to regs, it'll need upgrading'. And the poor householder falls for it. It can be very difficult to talk somebody out of it who's been got at in this way, because 'the electrician said so' and who am I as an unqualified person to criticise?

I once worked in a building that had been converted simply by erecting internal walls. No-one bothered to move the thermostats or AC* controls so comfortable working was impossible to achieve.

*Not really AC but some form of cheap cooling system that reduced the temperature from a fast boil to a low simmer during the summer months.

I worked in one that was designed without AC, but had good cross-flow from open windows on one side, to the windows on the other side. Unfortunately it was designed before the advent of PCs and so there was a lot more heat generated than had been planned for and to please the managers who liked their own offices, one side had been divided off into offices and so cut the windows off from the rest of the floor. It was hellish in the summer.

When did an installer *ever* call on an old customer? Millions of houses are full of wiring that doesn’t meet current standards but until work needs doing there’s no legal requirement to upgrade a working system. The exception to this would seem to be smoke alarms in Scotland though.

The rules regarding chargers are clear (link posted earlier). You can use an old dumb charger until it becomes unrepairable. A replacement would have to meet the new standards.

This happened to someone I know, the electrician was such a nice chap and a family business and everything, upstanding pillar of the community etc etc she was inclined to believe him. It took considerable deprogramming on my part to convince her that the work didn't need doing.

In this case the electrician did a CU replacement and was back some years later to do unrelated work, and told her the CU 'would need' upgrading to bring it up to date. And what householder wouldn't want to be up to date where electrical safety is concerned?

Agreed, there is no need to do it. Which is what I said to the lady, repeatedly.

That's the fuse carrier. You'd have to pull it to find out the rating of what's inside.

(Don't pull it, only the DNO is allowed to do that, and it needs special arc flash PPE)

In reality, for sale on eBay like everything else ... not sure whether there's supposed to be a unique id on the seal crimping tool?
