shower mixer, what to lube with

HI all

I have a bath mixer tap with shower outlet controlled by a pull up knob.

This has been fine , about 25years old.

I took it apart and the thing is simple. A thing shaped like a valve in an engine has a neoprene o ring. The shaft also has a very small o ring and it all slides up and down in the housing. The 'Valve' appears to be made of brass. There is a spring to return the 'valve' to the rest position.

Last week the big o ring got blasted off and it all stopped working.

I rescued the big o ring and reasembled. I used gt85 ptfe lube to reassemble and all seemed well. Now the lube has stopped working and the thing has gone stiff again.

Any advice on what to lube it with that will last and not destroy the neoprene? Thanks for any help

The problem is usually buildup of lime deposits somewhere. I would not normally expect to lubricate O rings in this sort of device (water is an adequate lubricant). But to answer your question on compatibilitiy, silicone (oil, grease, or spray) as sold for assembling push fit, gutters, etc. is compatible with all types of O ring (nitrile, butyl, neoprene, EPDF, or viton).

Not seen one of those for some time. my main remembrance of one was ben ding down to look in the slot when it jammed, wiggled it and got a get of water cold staight in the eye as if targetted there by some mischeivous person.. Lime scale definitely particularly around London I'd say. Its everywhere. Brian
