Hello,



I am thinking of installing an electric shower as back-up to the combi boiler.



I was expecting to use 10mm^2 cable but when I put some hypothetical figures into the TLC calculator it said I could use 6mm^2 clipped direct.



I think the highest powered shower is 10.5k, so I put 11kW into the calculator and a run of 12m.



What size would you use?

The 10 mm^2, you what to fit the high power shower. The low power ones are hopeless. Also, go for a quality shower. I like Mira but there are others.

Don't forget it needs and RCB, Isolation switch, bonding, and is subject to type P inspection etc.

or just run the bell wire inside the water pipe.

If no insulation, and it is being clipped direct/plastered in (not just lain on the plasterboard/joist) then 6mm would cover it with a bit spare. If it goes through/sits on/underneath any insulation, then put

10mm in.

I'd tend to put 10mm in as it will cover virtually all eventualities.

As this is a new installation then it would be 10mm.

If you use 250V in the calculation yes, not if you use 230V - which is the nominal UK voltage nowadays

What's the significance of it being clipped to the joist rather than lying on it?

With that Adam could have a 24kW shower on 3 phase, using the copper pipe as earth. Should make him happy.

Tried 1.8lpm today, don't like it. Back to 2.25.
