My Zimbabwean neighbour with works van through the wall asked me today if I wanted anything from B&Q just after I had got a lift home with my new panel door....so I thought yes I could do with a 2.4 by 1.2 insulating board...anyway he said he was going to get some plaster board to fill up a hole where he had just removed a inset electric fire that the prevous owner had installed...intrigued I asked if I could have a look at what he was doing when we returned...well f*ck me hadn't the previous owner Mr 'DIY' cut through three layers of plasterboard to fit a fire place with inset electric fire in the timber frame separating wall !.......fecking idiot !....no wonder I could hear every noise his white trash tenants made...fecking ridiculous you would think the penny might have dropped with Mr 'DIY' previous landlord owner that the three layers might have been there for a purpose...diy should be banned in the same way we are going to be landed with anti-tamper laws for motor vehicles.....

I approved it in 1990...it met the regs...whats the problem...diy punters can f*ck up anything....
only real problem with the house was that the window sills rotated after completion...
In the last 24 hours you?ve posted about a dark bathroom, cheap doors, plasterboard party walls, and now dodgy windows.
no...dark hall...I'm cheap....timber frame party walls are legal it is the DIY punters that are the problem....nothing wrong with the windows...just rotating window sills....

Plenty of tradesmen can do that to a nicely hermatically-sealed timber-framed house too by puncturing the vapour barrier and not bothering to repair the membrane.
Timber framed houses need a huge warning notice somewhere prominent like the cupboard under the stairs reminding owners of the necessity to maintain fire barriers in party walls etc
That's because the inner frame shrunk vertically but the outer brick skin didn't. Builder either allowed the frame to get wet while building or should have left a gap under the cill that was filled with mastic.
The windows should have been attached to the brickwork but were probably inset into the cavity and attached to the timber frame.

he ran out of money and left the house frame standing unprotected for a few wet months...congratulations on identifying the problem
thought about a light shaft but too much bother....
vapour barriers and hermatically sealing are over rated...sometimes it will be better just leting the vapour through to be dispersed in a well ventilated space ...
