The name "occasional table" always makes me smile and wonder what it becomes when it isn't being a table ;-)

I would have said that both are fairly widely used. All bit sets come with a selection of both. When I have a fairly large screw to drive, I usually try both types of driver and use the one which fits most solidly, which is not always the 'correct' type. Note that the Japanese 'Phillips' profile is nearly the same as the European one, but not quite.

Jeff, old chap: you've been around here quite a while: can you explain why you haven't got at least two of every kind of screwdriver ever invented?

Not really. I used to have a set of Phillips but then pozi came in and now they all appear to be pozi.

If he's anything like me, he's has one set upstairs, another downstairs and a third down in the shed. That's sets. There is a random collection of one-off screwdrivers of various types lying around here & there (often where I last used them).

"Dachshunds with erections can't climb stairs" sounds like one of those implausible phrases that spies exchange to confirm that each is who he says he is:

Spy 1: Dachshunds with erections Spy 2: Can't climb stairs Spy 1: Ah, so we have satisfied each other that we are genuine. Now... how many missiles does the USSR have?

They could be JIS.

More likely to be JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards).

Absolutely. Anything less is reckless.

My wife recently bought a flatpack potting table from Lidl. The screws are JIS. I was so please to tell her to wait while I fetched the *proper* screwdrivers from my workshop.

Perhaps they are ponZi then ? :-)
