Router bit help please

Hi,

Intumescent strips again :(

If I were to route a slot for an intumescent strip (adhesive on back and with smoke brush) what size router bit should I use? The strip is 10mm wide. I notice that screwfix sell 10mm and 9.5mm and 9mm. I guess that I am looking for a snug fit and so would 9.5 (or even 9) be more suitable? Any experiences/advice?

TIA Colin

Get a bit set. Now, with a pair of vernier calipers (or any other means of measuring accurately), you cut one slot with a (say) 6.25mm bit, and then adjust the fence by 2, 3 or 4mm to get assorted widths on the next cut.

When I was an engineering apprentice we used to call it a 'very near caliper' - but then, beer was not much more than a shilling a pint then! (that's 5p in today's money)

10 mil will give you enough room to fit it given the shaky effect of machine and user. 11 would be OK too but most likely you will get an half inch cutter cheaply enough. The groove is just to set the strip inside, out of the way -not so much to hold it in.

If it were not sunk in, there would be a risk of it being knocked off with use. The strip is self adhesive and can be fitted with a few pins.

If it were fitted flush you would need an unsightly gap on the door. As it is, you will need some 4 or 5 mil on each edge.

By the way, you will also need a sharp half inch chisel for the corners. (And a long reach router bit.)

FWIW I used some of this stuff the other year on a specialist door we had to make, and it fitted fine with IIRC a 10 mill router bit in a lightweight trend router....

Thanks everyone for the advice.

I notice that toolstation are doing free delivery (no min order amount) and so have just banged in an order for a 10mm router bit.
