replacing spur with socket

Hi I just had a new washing machine delivered and the driver said he could not install it as it was to be hard wired into a spur under the kitchen worktop, so it is now plugged into a socket with the cable lying over the top of the worktop. Can I replace the spur (don't know correct name) with an ordinary socket and plug it in that way, as he also said the guarantee would be invalid if I cut the plug off and hardwired it into the spur? Thanks Ron

Easy job to replace a spur with a normal socket. I also wouldn't have thought that chopping off a plug would invalidate the guarantee.

Just as well. The chances of the driver being trained or capable of doing this aren't great. And he certainly wouldn't be covered by insurance if something went wrong.

He's talking rubbish.

However, a socket makes more sense for easy servicing.

IANAL.

Chopping off the plug won't invalidate the guarantee. Statutory rights would still apply, and it would almost certainly be considered an unfair term anyway. I've never even seen it tried on.

Normally the instructions tell you to remove the plug if it needs to be wired differently. They do this, as they need to tell you to throw the old dangerous plug away immediately in case some kid plugs it in and gets fried.

You can always replace with a socket if you prefer, though.
