It's gone downhill in recent years. I think the council has lent its half brain cell to Stockton on Tees.

I seem to remember they were a DoT funded initiative in various locations around the country. There was one that I had to traverse quite often in Halesowen (Brummagen) circa those dates. 'Twas an evil beast; the "kerbstones" were like those used today to protect workers on motorways. They would alter overnight or weekends to try different layouts - hence the local (I thought) name at that time of magic roundabouts.

Unitary authority's the phrase I was thinking of...

It was a county borough from 1915 to 1974, thus having a dislike of being lumped under Durham county from then until recently, when it became a unitaty authority. It seems to come under "Tees Valley" together with the former Cleveland districts(unitary authorities) but seems to have little to do with either them or Co. Durham. This meens its older citizens at the moment have the most restrictive bus passes in the area, being limited to just the authority area (and to the local hospital which is esewhere).
