Is there some way of having a split where each part of the SSD has its own MBR etc.
Windows 7-32 and Lubuntu. Probably 99% Windows, if that's relevant.

If it's NVMe, there are 'namespaces':
But it's more of an enterprisey feature and I don't know how well consumer hardware supports it.
I've never used it. Although, funnily enough, I do have a use case similar to yours (KUbuntu and Win11). I might try it sometime, but no promises on timeline.

It is a SATA device.
I save and restore the WIN boot partition every three months. It has worked fine - until it didn't. I'd guess that the back-up / restore (ACRONIS) mechanism has slightly changed the starting sector for the Win
7 restore - but, overridden by GRUB, this completely buggered the booting of Win 7 - leading to GRUB Rescue. BOOTREC did nothing to fix things.Why now, when this process has worked for five years, I wonder?
Dunno,but Windows 8.1 is my main OS although I can also boot into Windows 10 & Windows 11 (so 3 OS's) on a partitioned M.2 NVMe drive using Easy BCD -
Just install virtualbox on your main system and run the other in a virtual machine
Windows will not acknowledge multiple OS boot loaders
