Except in war-time the military are a self selecting group appealing most to those who value discipline, order, and authority figures.
Outside of that, among conscripts and volunteers there's no evidence that military service had any noticeable uniform affect at all.
While among both conscripts and volunteers in World War One it appears that the whole ethos was often determined by the Country or Colony of origin.
