Its the 7 colours of the spectrum, with black for nought, brown for one (halfway between black and red) grey for eight and white for nine.
I never had any problems, or need for mnemonics.
After a while the coses were second nature for preferred values in the E20 range anyway.
Had to think a bit for high precision sometimes.
