The single zero write should also be done on any disk in any machine that is being scrapped, donated, sold, or otherwise disposed of.

For machines I ebay, I then re-install the OS that it came with.

That's odd. I seem to have been using exclusively Linux on my daily-use computers for about six or seven years now. And I've never _once_ felt the need for WINE.

Good enough ? Gimp can't handle the RAW format photographs from my camera. I might be lucky to a find plugin, but it's unlikely to be as easy to use or have the same capabilities as Photoshop. And do I want to write scripts - do I f*ck.

If already infected a second (uninfected) computer for the download is probably required. Put them on a USB memory stick and boot from the stick first.

If not infected it may worth keeping a copy of one of these on a memory stick (with a paper copy of the instructions)

Apart from anybody who designs a platform-specific website needing firmly battering to death, those behind si.edu certainly don't appear to be guilty of such heinous crimes.

UFRaw does RAW file manipulation and conversion. Apparently it'll work from within GIMP, but I've never bothered.

What camera do you have? As far as I know UFRaw will deal with pretty much all RAW types. It copes with the Fujifilm RAW files my ancient E550 produces.

Gimp is really quite capable. There's not many features that it doesn't have which the latest versions of Photoshop do have, but then again, I'm happy to work harder for the same outcome given the price difference of the two pieces of software.
