RCD Problem

Hi All

Son in rented house has an intermittent problem with the RCD

Will be getting electrician in anyway but thought would ask here to see if any thoughts

His use of appliances etc had not changed at the time the problem arose

House is only 10 years old

Once every few weeks the RCD trips several times over about 45 minutes

The first time this happened it affected the whole house wiring on the first trip and then just the sockets on the subsequent ones in that session. He thought that he had solved it when he switched off the uplighter but subsequent use of that did not cause the problem to re-occur

This pattern of trips has repeated several times since and the uplighter was not the cause

Problem happened about 11 pm last night affecting only the sockets and he switched off everything he could think of aquarium, computers, baby bottle sterilizer, etc etc but the RCD tripped 4 more times after doing that without switching anything else off then did not do so again

What will the electrician do to find the problem?

Tony

Did he remove all plugs? Is the whole house protected by one RCD?

Don't forget the MCB only switches the live and that you can still get a neutral to earth current to trip the RCD.

Hi John

thanks for the link I have passed it on to my son will at least help him to understand the problem
