The white plastic pipe I am using is NOT waste pipe but either JG Guest PEX or FloPlast PEX in eiether 15mm or 22mm bore.
I'm not going to cut my joists that deep to accommodate 40mm waste pipe and accommodate the required fall too! I'd weaken the joist too far.

They'd get very confused looking under my ground floor. They'd find a
32mm, white, plastic waste pipe that forms a very large D shape, connecting to nothing but itself. Close examination would spot some clear, plastic tubes pushed into holes drilled in it. It used to be an air ring-main when I had fish tanks! It kept the noise of the air pumps out of the way in a kitchen cupboard.SteveW
An old pair of tights stretched over a wire frame did the trick. Obviously you want to filter over a reasonably large area. Small goldfish in the raintank seemed to keep the filter clean without damaging it.
