Positioning hasp and staple

Of hasp and staple, which goes on the gate and which on the post? Perhaps it doesn't matter.

I've always tried to put the hasp on the post, so that it doesn't flap about when the gate is use - it can give quite a poke if the wind catches the gate (but if you like that sort of thing...). Sometimes there isn't enough space around the post for the hasp to be angled away from the gate, so the staple might be better there in that case.

Staple on the gate otherwise the hasp flaps about when the gate is moved.

Hopefully it's a meaty on with concealed fixings.
