Squeals from the upstairs bathroom alerted me to a sudden leak from below the sink.

It seems that shutting off the bath tap (a ceramic disk valve jobbie) had caused a sufficiently powerful hydraulic shockwave to break a fitting beneath the sink.Fortunately, knowing where our stop valve is and having a box full of plumbing odds and ends meant that a repair was completed in 15 minutes.
