The apprentice that mounted the cooker switch that said "NO" failed his AM2.

Unsafe isolation.

He locked the MCB into the "ON" position.

Oops.

Hopefully at that point they stopped the assessment. I thought safe isolation was the thing they checked first?

Do you mean the "NO" position?

How is it possible to lock an MCB? Are these industrial ones, with a facility to lock them in place with multiple padlocks, one for each worker?

And, if so, why would there need to be a facility to lock it on?

To get that facility, do you have to install it upside down?

I feel quite sorry for him. He's gone through a long period of learning and apprenticeship, then failed at the end. And is he even suited to a career as an electrician?

"The AM2 test costs £655." Does he have to pay that for any retakes he does?

As for isolation you use a lock out kit. Have a look at this (1min 30sec)

I am not sure what kit he was using or how he did it.

You are not the only one who feels sorry for him, although we knew he would not pass. You have to remember that he has been with us for four and a half years.

He started with us when he was 16 and caught the train into Doncaster every morning and then walked for 30 minutes from the train station to the office. He did this until he passed his driving test and bought a car. That walk included two winters. He was, and still is, a polite and nice young man, so on the days I was calling into the office in the morning and not going straight to site I would pick him up at the train station[1].

However polite and nice do not pass exams. He is without a doubt the hardest challenge we have had but as long as he keeps giving 110% effort we will help him.

[1] It would take too long for me to actually drive to the train station using the correct way via St Georges Bridge so I used to drive down the bus lane over the North Bridge and he jumped into the van at the traffic lights where North Bridge Roads meets Church way. He got pretty good at jumping into a moving van if the lights were not at red.

I didn't know you could get those for a standard MCB, but it seems simple enough. It's really a shame that they can lock the MCB in the wrong position.

Ahem

When I was involved,it wasn't possible to lock an MCB in the ON position. Though there were gadgets available to lock them OFF. Eg:-

He has to pay for retests. But not that much.

I commuted to the London Hosp whitechapel for 4 years.

This involved a 17 min walk to the local station, then a 90 minute stopping service to London Bridge, and then a speed-walk 35 min walk from London Bridge to Whitechapel.

Then the reverse at night.

Annual (SR) season ticket was about £400, but in those days tube fares were relatively high in comparison, so I walked, no matter what the weather.

I like that. My apprentice is as thick as mince but he's a pleasant lad and he tries so he can stay.

He started at the same time as the apprentice I allegedly assaulted. There is a difference between a lazy bastard apprentice that runs around the car park shouting "suck my dick" and a well mannered young man that tries hard to do his job.

An lot of London is walkable.

I usually arrive at Euston Station. It is only 25 minutes walk to Trafalgar Square.

No way would I want to do it every day.
