Just had a call (local number) from our "Internet Support Team" regarding about a couple of transactions on "your card" about which "we are calling as you've never used those services before" (true as it happens). Rather than pressing 1 or 2 as suggested, I hung up and checked our providers (no suspicious transactions "this morning"). I have a feeling there's somewhere to report these attempts, but can't remember where. Any suggestions?

I use the 'who called me' websites a LOT.
Just report the number

Not sure there is anywhere. If you've been scammed, you can report it to NCSC:

, but that doesn't appear to include unsuccessful scam calls. The problem is that there's a lot of number spoofing going on, so even if the number is shown it may not be valid.
The scammers seldom have the ability to select random spoofed numbers. The reportage works well. No scammer who has ever phoned me has failed to appear on the 'who called me' website.

Yes, the number that called showed up here.
We get few calls as our landline is ex-directory. When we do, they come in fits and starts. We'll get none for a couple of months, then several on the same day. Invariably, CLI shows them to be from a city such as Bristol, Manchester, or Leeds, etc. The numbers are /never/ the same. We always let them go to answerphone, and the call ends a few seconds after the answerphone message starts.
Just got one from Bristol on my mobile now that hung up when I answered
"0117 441 2936 - This number is operated by IP Voice Networks Ltd and is primarily associated with scam calls . While its dialling code associates it with Bristol, England, it utilises VoIP technology. As a result, the actual location of the caller cannot be determined."
They normally rent them from the pool of numbers held by their VoIP provider... the more diligent ones will search all the obvious scam number databases for one that either does not appear or does not appear to frequently or recently. Needless to say it does not take long for the number to get on the lists, but it can give them a few hours of calling without the number being that if a well known scammer.
Really not worth the trouble. They change their numbers all the time. The best you can do is to press 1 and then waste as much of their time as possible. Bonus points if you can get them to swear at you.

Our landline doesn't have a phone plugged in. We get zero calls.
And with the loss of POTS, I've realised we don't actually have an RJ45 standard phone to test the VOIP adapter Virgin have sent.
you just need a new lead for your existing phone
or a phone adapter dongle
Often a RJ45 to BT adapter is included in this type of package.
I don't have the latest VM hub but thought it was RJ11 to BT
You are probably correct. The adapter into my (Fritz) router is RJ11 to BT. I have a DECT phone/answerphone plugged into my router for VOIP calls.
Dedicated telephony kit uses RJ11 - structured cabling of course uses Cat5/RJ45
We don't have an existing phone - that's the point.
I may have mixed up RJ45 (CAT5) and RJ11 (POTS).
We don't have a wired phone in the house. I access my VOIP number via PC and mobiles for all else.
