and are ther still Thames petrol stations ? ...

Where I was staying in the past few weeks a small family run business was selling petrol and diesel at around 20p/litre cheaper than anywhere else in a 30 mile radius. I filled up before my 250 mile journey home at £1.55/litre (E10 unleaded petrol).

The only disadvantage was that they only had 4 pumps in a small space and many people took to driving that way in order to take advantage of the price resulting in waiting anything from 10 to 30 minutes to get to the pumps. They do have a facebook page where they inform the local community when they get supplies etc.

The base of all fuels in the UK conforms to the same grade specification, such as BS EN 228 E10 for petrol with 10% Ethanol, irrespective of the originating refinery.

The difference between Shell, BP, Texaco or whoever is that they add additives before dispatch from the fuel depot, a bit like a shot of Red-Ex was added to your own tank when you filled up in days of old.

Not true for Esso* Synergy 99 Octane. Their website says this has no ethanol at Esso pumps in the South East and other parts because of 'technical reasons' at the refinery. The pump handle might say E5, but there isn't any.

Last week North Yorkshire was 11ppl more expensive than Barnsley - this week it 5ppl cheaper.

Correct. Read my wording, I chose the words carefully.

BS EN 228 E10 is the base specification for E10 petrol.

It is an example for E10 petrols. There are many other standards.

The one to avoid up there is Wetherby Services. Rip off.

The clue for being ripped off anywhere in the UK is the word Services being in the location name.

Wetherby was, last time I was there, significantly more expensive than other services in N Yorks.
