A local plumber came when the boiler packed up, with my wife in attendance. Apparently he made reference to the "board" being at fault. I'm assuming that this refers to the PCB. I am seeing that in the list from the supplier you sent, so hopefully this won't be too expensive. I wanted to be prepared in case we got the old "no spairs available, it'll have to be a new boiler mate" line.

I don't do boilers/gas so am reliant on the "experts" when these issues arise.

When I was stuck in the past I looked on ebay for boards, one was a total bust but I got one that was new in box which I had as a spare until the house was sold. There were a good number available so I could pick & choose. 'From a known working boiler' I wouldn't touch but new is fine, seller refurbished from a reputable source a possible. WBs are great but their relays appear underrated and the contacts go.

That said I am from an electronics background so have little problem with swapping out or even fixing duff boards.

For the purposes of the Gas Act I also count as a 'Competent Person' so also do my own servicing and gas work.

If I was the only one in the house, I would probably investigate the problem myself and rely on the good folks here for leads on diagnostics and such. But I'm not and er-indoors wouldn't appreciate my enthusiasm!

I had a WB boiler in my last house, can't remember the model. It developed a fault where it would turn off every so often and need resetting. It was the PCB, and I read somewhere that it was a not uncommon fault, probably caused by a voltage spike or something on the mains.

I couldn't repair it, tried a few obvious things and a particular high voltage capacitor which I read could be the problem but wasn't. So I bought a new one. I fitted a mains filter in the supply cable to the PCB by splitting the outer insulation and extracting the live and neutral wires to go through the filter, filter ground to chassis. I seem to remember there was a convenient screw hole. It worked from there on till we moved at least.

When a family member had this problem (not W-B), the gas man diagnosed a bad PCB, said it would cost £350 plus labour to replace - maybe it was time to consider a new boiler? I found one on ebay, apparently it was such a common fault a company had released an upgraded board - bought it new-old-stock for £60 and got it sent there. Gas man agreed to replace but no warranty etc. His fee (including recommissioning and testing) was about £100. Boiler is still going strong.

So maybe see if you can hunt down a board and a GasSafer willing to replace it?

That CET (Chingford) is different from the old CET (Watford), maybe Adam knows?

Last time I saw him, 7+ years ago, he was thinking of moving to the Far East. He did have some really good Staff, he didnt actually do any 'manual' work at that time, he did all the admin, so it could have been passed / sold onto the existing Staff.
