OTish Gas fire query

on a forum far far away there's a thread about a tenant who's gas fire doens't work "'gas fire turned off and Warning notice issued' and somehting about flame supervision device faulty."

Is that likely to be expensive to repair?

The landlord isn't going to repair it - there's central heating so prob no need. I just think it's a bit strange for them to not bother fixing it.

If the tenants took the place and the fire was working then it should be fixed. It may be that the tenants aren't that fussed about the fire, in that case well and good and the Landlord can have the fire removed when they leave.

The flame super vision device is almost certainly a thermocouple and the replacement unit should be less than £20. (This is not a boiler where a universal £4 unit can be used). The work involved should be a minimum charge visit.

It is also one less appliance to have serviced each year. And some landlords are tight.

They didn't get the gas certificate which mentioned it until after they'd signed.

So they're just being a bit mean? It's not like the whole thing needs replacing?

Does it need checking each year if it's left there and not repaired?

Yes! some even change the gas cooker to electric, and choose buy2let home that have electric heating for the same reasons.

Gas fires are not as inherently safe as boilers and there can be many problems that can come to light when repairing a minor fault.

On the other hand a nice gas fire can be a feature.
