OT: Wireless Printer Problem

I lurk around this group and know how broad is the expertise of those taking active part . So I will try here for help.

My wireless printer is an HP photosmart 5520. My router is a Netgear DGN2200. The printer has been working wirelessly for a year or two. When switched on 2 days ago - no joy. Some detail which might give somebody a clue what is happening is the following sequence of events. Switch the printer on router log shows DHCP allocating the expected IP address (192.168.0.5 router list of ATTACHED devices does NOT show the printer

The last is different from what happened in the past.

So what is an attached device? How is attachment achieved?

TIA Frank

First obvious question - have you rebooted the router?

Hmm, used to have both devices here in the past and had problems with both, still sample size of 1. Ignore that :)

Are you having problems with any other wireless device connected to the router? Usual first step (after rebooting the router) is to remove the connection information from the printer (or other recalcitrant device) and set up its WiFi again, surprising how often that works :)

Is the DHCP log up to date, is it actually allocating an ip, or merely reporting a historic one?

You will probably find that some new router is now on which is interfering with yours. I hate wireless printers, I mean you have to enter some stupid thing in with buttons etc, and then it forgets it at the slightest hiccup.

Yes but it still sounds like interference to me, the fact that it worked before. Its probably using a different channel now. Brian

I have had a few encounters with HP wireless printers, and find that on rare occasions they do tend to vanish from the network and require a bit of prodding to get back again...

A quick ping to the IP is usually a good test.

I didn't mention that pinging its address returned with "host unreachable"

My second option would be to delete and reinstall the printer.
