OT: Why don't we cover mountains in wind farms?

The farm here is anything but middle of nowhere. half a mile from the M11.

By their nature the more area, the more output. The US southwest has the ideal conditions. Much of it is desert with no residents. Plunking one down in an area like you showed with what seems to be a lot of recreational attractions would be almost impossible.

That is one advantage to wind turbines. The base of the pylons aren't very big so in farming country like Iowa the farmer can lease acreage and after they're installed resume plowing and planting with very little lost land.

Isn't everything in Britain half a mile from something? I'm surprised they're worthwhile that far north in a country that doesn't call sunshine to mind. The latitude here is 47 degrees, about 240 miles south of London, and solar if iffy.

That one will cover 1100 acres. For scale, a section, 640 acres, is a mile on each side. Fallon County is 1600 square miles with about 3000 residents so nobody will notice except the prairie dogs. Whether it is really viable without government incentives is another question.

Warren Buffett believes strongly in wind farming. Particularly in Iowa.

Just saw this today:

Just like the wind farms where there may not be enough wind or it blows too hard, solar can suffer from the weather.

If all we had were wind and solar we would be guaranteed of constant blackouts and brownouts.

That site also has 3 wind turbines. Santapod raceway is only close to one village (Podington) and they have a curfew time for racing because of the noise pollution. The solar farm is not that noticeable in that location

The stars and stripes flies on the approach road, in the memorial to the US Airforce personnel who died serving there during WW2.

Surely they don't sleep on a windy night?

I thought it was bad enough in Scotland. In my home town of 3000 my signal strength is 1-4 bars out of 6, and half the time drops from 4G down to 3G, phonecalls are gurgly and I can't understand every word. In my parents' town of 700, I get one bar 3G at one particular part of the house and nothing elsewhere.

Who gives a f*ck about reducing carbon emissions, the thing plants need to breathe?

The point is wind power is f****ng cheap at 6 cents a kWh. There is no fuel cost!

And if we're going to insist on this childish boycotting of Russia because we're too chicken to have a real war, we need to stop relying on gas from the world's best leader.

Indeed, you only really see them form a plane, and then it just looks like a different type of crop.

Seems they're killing the rare wildlife, the ones who aren't very good genetically anyway.

You mean the proposed one? WTF are these f****ng morons getting upset about? They don't like wind, solar, nuclear, fossil, .... do we go live in caves? Where do they think electricity comes from, the plug in the wall?

Funny how they do well in hot California.

Bullshit. You put them in every country. There's always somewhere perfect for generation. Then you buy and sell it from each other.

I tried some solar panels of my own just to see how good they were. Rated at 250W each (door sized), I got 90W each for a couple of hours a week, the rest of the time more like 30W. They're f****ng s**te in Scotland. And I had an intelligent voltage booster that matched the output precisely to the batteries. We do not get sun in the UK. Solar panels work from sunlight. And no they are not any good when it's cloudy, despite the marketing bullshit. Just look at the difference you get in a suntan/burn on a sunny or cloudy day, or how hot it feels. The difference in energy is a lot.

Isn't that supposed to be a runway?

Even better here, a local sheep farm is full of them. No problems with going round the concrete bases with ploughs. The farmer has an easy time, he seems to own an enormous amount of hilly inaccessible land you couldn't get tractors up and down, and just lets thousands of sheep out there. Just some fences to maintain, and he gets about on a quadbike.

You're strange. You tell me bullshit then prove me correct.

Oh, you get the windmills for free, huh? No energy cost there.

Total nonsense. By the time wind power hots yourr electricity meter its more like 40c a KWh. Man cannot live by windpower alone, and if you ignore the cost of the externalities you are guilty of fraud

[snip]

How do you "need" wind generators when there's no wind?

OT: At one time the word "chicken" was plural, like with "oxen". I still never heard "cowen" amd "goaten".
