OT: Printing problem

HP printer here has improved in network reliability (i.e. being there and working properly) and features (status display, etc.) since installing the Universal drivers.

But that would obviously not help a Dell.

In control panel, there is a Troubleshooting applet. Run this, and select "use a printer" under the Hardware and Sound category.

That was one of the first things I tried!!!! I've tried a different printer which also refuses to print. Print jobs appear briefly in the print queue then disappear as if they have been printed Regards, Iain

I had a similar problem recently when I changed the wireless card in my laptop. I resolved it by doing the following:

1 . Open registry editor. 2 . Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
  1. Create a new DWORD value with the following properties: NAME: LmCompatibilityLevel =20 VALUE: 1
  2. Restart your PC.

You don't say how the printer is interfaced, but you describe the exact symptoms that you will get with a parallel connected printer where the not ready/buffer full signal is open circuit. My money is on a dodgy connection or failed printer cable, unless the electronics has failed giving the same symptoms

Andrew, The printer is on the network, connected on the same router as the computer. Other computers on the network can print with no problems. I think that the latest Microsoft update has screwed things up, but even rolling back the update has not helped. Regards, Iain
