So, say you were caught speeding, and the magistrates, just on a whim, decided to ban you for life, crush your car, and fine you £100,000. That's okay, because they can impose any punishment they deem appropriate?

Clearly, that would be unjust, and that's the point the kids are making.

Don't be silly. The magistrates have a range within which they can punish, not one fixed punishment and of course there are written guidelines. Outside those guidelines, their punishment would have to be challenged in court - there have been cases where sentences have been overturned at appeal on the grounds that the magistrate or judge passed a sentence that they were not authorised to do so.

Schools have punishments such as lines, detention, suspension, exclusion, but generally there is no need of written lists of what is not allowed and what the punishment is. Anything that is reasonable is okay. Anything that is unjust would be challengeable by the governors, the LEA and finally the courts.

It is hardly unjust to decide that the particular offence, at a particular time and perhaps by a persistant offender, requires a slightly different punishment - even magistrates have that flexibility.

As it was not a punishment that was unfair for the particular transgression, they should not have been challenging it at all. This feeling that all authority can be questioned and talked back to without good reason, is very damaging to the discipline of schools and hardly helps lead to smooth running institutions, with good behaviour and good teaching/learning.

Arbitrary punishment my arse. The teacher dished out an allowed punishment and the pupil wanted a different easier punishment. The head backed the teacher and the pupil was not happy. Tough s*it.

There are TV transmitters on the North Wales Coast broadcasting S4C etc and no-one watches them, because everyone uses Winter Hills signals. They don't want Welsh telly any more than we do. North Wales is a part of the English North-west culturally.
