OT: MP2 to MP3 converter: recommendations?

Mar 12, 2017 6 Replies

Any recommendations for MP2 to MP3 (& vice versa) converters? There is the usual clutch of 'free' software and even now a few 'free' website offering conversion (what are the gotchas?)

Preferably Windows based (for software).

Any recommendations?

TIA

Do you have many to do and for what purpose?

I only needed to convert a few that were stored on an SD card which were recordings saved by a pure evoke 3 dab radio. On occasions I wanted to play them in the car which would only play back MP3 from a USB memory stick. I found just renaming the file extension from MP2 to MP3 was the only action needed to get the car radio to play them.

Of course if you have a lot to do that may be too tedious and I have no idea waht other applications will respond to a simple renaming of the file extension.

If its for audio, audacity works I think

IIRC its all platforms

Y0ou may need to ahem download some slightly not quite pukka software (LAME) for MP2

Excellent;: useful tip! Thank you. That's exactly the main purpose: Evoke DAB radio to car radio. I'll try it!

Another +1 for Audacity, not sure what's the problem with LAME, ISTR I recently had to download that too (ripping vinyl to MP3 with a cheap eBay A-D converter).

SoX. Command line based so you can automate it. Google 'sox for Windows'

AIUI the original spec for any mp3 decoder included that it should also play mp2. This seems to have been ignored and eroded over the years, including by Fraunhofer, the originators of mp3.

This may explain why some mp3 players may play mp2 when renamed, as the actual decoder should use the internal metadata to work out what has to be decoded.
