OT: Mattress

Not something you buy every day. And remember being told once that the markup on a mattress was higher than similar goods. Judging by the prices in the shops I'd say this still is true.

So where is the best place to buy? Online?

I bought a foam one from Ikea last week, MORGEDAL.

It was all rolled up, so king size fitted in my small car.

Ikea give a 25 years guarantee.

It stank of chemicals for a week but seems very firm, which is what I wanted.

Because it was foam I need to add an extra slat to my bed base to reduce the gap between slats.

I have no idea how long it will last.

ISTR ikea beds being non-standard sizes, is that still the case, or do 'normal' UK sheets fit them?

The Mattresses come in standard UK sizes, sold in store. My bed base is a standard UK bed, not an Ikea bed.

They also sell European sizes online, but only if you want one.

Be aware. There is fraudulent mattresses available. Good quality manufactures labels sewn on to shoddy (this term is very appropriate ) goods

ITYF that there isn't such a thing as European size

There is Ikea size and the rest.

(it is common in Germany, for instance, for double beds to be made from two single mattresses on a king sized base. But this isn't a standard Ikea size any more than UK double beds are.)

I'm not sure I'd know who was a good quality maker these days. I just had a quick look at John Lewis and their prices for a King Size vary from 140 to 3500 quid. And the only brands I recognised were Hypnos (from the hotel ads) and Silentnight.

You could always go for one of those posh ones what are they called? Lisa or some girls name they give you a lot of nights to test it and will take it back if not satisfied. Yes Matresses do seem to be very expensive also difficult to get rid of the old ones if the fly tips around here are anything to go by. Brian

They do just about but the corners of fitted sheets do tend to pop off and need putting back perhaps every other night it seems no big deal but I will aviod ikea size doubles next time I buy a matress.

I'm not sure what you mean standard. The Ikea king size mattress I bought 1.5m x 2m. Standard UK king size is 1.52m x 1.98m.

It fits my frame well enough, 2cm tolerance is acceptable to me.

I just cut my old one up and took it to the dump, no problem. It wouldn't have been that much effort to separate the springs a bit more so it could go in the normal rubbish.

I guess some people are very lazy.

I'd have thought that cutting up a mattress generate would lots of fluff from the stuffing/filing inside, which is almost impossible to clean up and will blow everywhere.

Swamps of Sqornshellous Zeta?

Not in my case. There was a woolly layer and a fibrous layer both of which came off intact, in one piece. These wrapped a spring framework interior.

It was a Litvinoff and Fawcett Classic 'super'. Still being sold 25 years after I bought it.

The last time I cut up a mattress the woolly layer disintegrated into copious amounts of fluff that blew all over the place like several bucketfuls of dandelion clocks. It took me ages to clean up all the fluff - I was still finding bits of it hiding in bushes and flowerbeds for several weeks. I never knew that one mattress could generate so much fluff :-)

though your find the difference is noticeable for fitted sheets

Do you have a local independent bed specialist? We used to go to an old warehouse in a back street for a good range of beds and mattresses at very reasonable prices.

Often find a bit of fluff on a matress ;-)

Yeahbut, I don't, The sheet fits fine.

On a king size the perimeter is exactly the same. I actually found an unopened new Sainsburys fitted sheet in the cupboard and it actually said the Ikea size, 1.5m x 2.0m.

I remember in the past, like 25 years ago, having a problem that Ikea duvet sizes didn't match UK duvet sizes but I don't know where this fitted sheet stuff is coming from.

Maybe you have have a problem with mattress depth? I notice some of the newer mattresses are deeper 30cm as opposed my mattresses at ~20cm.
