OT:Looking for monitor (i.e. computer display) recommendations

I have been using a 24" Dell 1200 x 1600 resolution display for a long, long time. (I bought it in 2009)



I'm thinking an upgrade might be a good idea and monitors are much cheaper now - the Dell cost £373.



So I'm looking for recommendations, I think my requirements are:-



  • 27" (about as big as I have space for) * display port and/or DVI-D inputs, HDMI less important * doesn't need to be super fast, I don't use it for games * must be quick to come out of idle mode (see below) * probably 2560x1440 QHD

By "must be quick to come out of idle mode" I mean that I want the display to appear quickly (as in less than a second or so) when you hit the keyboard or mouse after the display has been turned off by the computer. This is one of the few things that annoys me about the Dell, it takes several seconds to wake up.



My budget is flexible but I can't really see any good reason to spend more than £200 or so, there's lots of 27" monitors for less.

Mine's 13 seconds. My last CRT monitor was quicker than that from a cold start. But, microcomputers...

If either you or the monitor ever receive sunshine, more likely at this time of year, make sure it has a matt screen. It will be a little dimmer, but if it's shiny, it will reflect everything sunlit. It's not always in the spec.

With 2560x1440 in 27" screens that normally turns up in "Gaming" and "Pro" screens - but less so in "normal" ones.

So some options would be:

AOC 27" 3-Side Frameless QHD Gaming Monitor (Q27G2E/BK), 2560 x 1440,

1ms, 2 HDMI, DP, 155Hz, Freesync, 6 Game Modes, VESA

or if you want HDR as well:

Asrock 27" Phantom Gaming QHD IPS Gaming Monitor (PG27QFT2A), 2560 x

1440, 1ms, 2 HDMI, DP, 180Hz, HDR 400, Wi-Fi Antenna, VESA

Or "pro" with accurate colour etc:

Asus ProArt 27" WQHD Professional Monitor (PA278QV), IPS, 2560 x 1440,

5ms, DVI, HDMI, DP, Mini DP, 100% sRGB, VESA

The first couple should be in budget...

That is a harder call - you might find the multisynch ones take a moment longer... It depends on if the screen is just blanked - then it should be close to instant, or if it is actually in standby. That could take a couple of seconds.

The budget end may lack "In Plane Switching" (IPS) (better colour accuracy and wider viewing angles as well as fast response times.

You also tend to get nicer stands with better ones - say offering height adjustment and the option of rotation (so you can use the screen in portrait mode), and things like built in USB hubs, and Display Port pass through (so you can hang multiple monitors off a single DP feed from the PC)

And others for really less, me mind boggles....

Not really answering your question, but checking out the local charity shops here that sell electricals, the going price for ex-office computer screens with all interesting features to me (DVI, HDCP, IPS, HD, LED backlight) is about fiver or less. Dell UltraSharp monitors I just jump at.

Just picked up an HP 2211x for £3, plugged a fire stick into it via a HDMI-DVI straight through lead and with a bluetooth speaker for sound, it's an instant 22" 1080HD "TV"...

I use an IIyama 32 inch IPS monitor. Suits me fine. I wouldn't go back to a smaller monitor now.

I only use it in Full HD resolution.
