Beyond my tech-savvy and info as 10 years ago. All I can think is ftp to a known site with a known fixed largish file and see what the kbps is on my activity monitor , at different times , ifalwayshigh then 4G.
While on that techy page, reference to 2G reminded me. Are the 10 squid mobile phones at ASDA a scam? they openly say theyare
2G, but relyon "Icant be bothered claiming basck as only 10 quid"/"cant find the till receipt" oris there some specialised use for them?
Depends if it's being used in "fake modem" mode, or "fake network card" mode.
And whether you're using windows own drivers and UI to control it, or an app provided by the dongle manufacturer?
You can see that an item like that can be "not fit for purpose".

Keeping to the KISS ethic In a rather marginal fringe mobile site I routinely ftp to a site with a 30 to 31K csv file on it. So today with the 4G dongle a few downloads of it , the monitor incremented 30 or 31K, the speed graphic is updated per second and gave speeds of 120 or 121 kbps, so presumably 1/4 second download. I don't intend to swap the SIM back to the 3G dongle but I reckon it was more like 3 or 4 bars, ie seconds, to download that file, can't remember the speeds.
The login page for the ancient dongle I have tells me the network I'm connected to.
Sim status on my phone does that too,
