The thing is, I believe much of the 'old skool' 'having pride in your work' has been lost, partly driven down by cost. So people / tradesmen often don't strive to do their best but the minimum they can get away with (even to their employers / the customer / their other half). ;-)

So, if you still do strive to do your best, do a job that few could better, and it seems to take longer or cost more, you can easily be chastised for doing so when you should really be applauded.

When (at 17) I was going though the Training School at BT we had to solder up a 100 wire terminal block. They were very strict on the correct 'wrap' of the wire around the post, the soldering and any insulation runback. I was one of the only trainees to get 100% and my piece was still in the display cabinet when I left. To me it wasn't an achievement, nothing special, just me doing what I do the best I can. I was more frustrated why we didn't *all* achieve 100% ;-(
