ON topic!!! What to do with this bit of wood?

I sawed a small plank from a piece of (I think) cherry. It's 20" long and 6" wide at its widest.



Apart from sticking it in a log burner or up an orifice, what would you suggest I do with this little plank of wood?

I was staggered that it took over an hour to saw this. Admittedly, that was with a fine tooth saw (Bahco 244), but it was a sharp point saw, and still pretty sharp. Along the grain, too.



How did they do this in the wild west, when they had to build their cabins before winter set in?

I meant hand carve, but I guess all bets are off if you have no tools. I guess you have a saw so could make some wedges for door stops.

If you have a router you could route a house name or number in it.

Use it for serving very hipster salads on?

They used natural logs notched out at the corners. The gaps were filled with mud. Plus they used the adze. cheating a bit here.

Well unless you?re using a saw designed for ripping, it?s always going to be considerably harder to saw along the grain.

They used the right saws. ;-)

I too have a similar bit of cherry.

I bought it to make a knife rack. I did that years ago with some wood from inside a sofa - no idea what sort. And I have just made one more or less the same out of ash. That took a lot of sawing! My poor mitre saw...

Far too used to modern soft-soft-softwoods!

I suspect the cabins were built from green timber. And they likely chose the less tough species, where possible.

Make spoons. It's what I have been doing with some cherry that came my way. It's pretty tough though and you would benefit from a spoon shaver.

you could also make a side table or little bandsaw boxes. I guess google will provide lots of pictures from 'log offcut make' or something similar.
