Old glazed tile fireplaces -making

I just found myself wondering how the old tiled fireplaces were made. Were they made "inside out" by laying tiles in a mould and then filling with concrete? They were obviously made in big numbers at one time.

I'd like to know, I still have one in my front room in green. Brian

They were so common-place that there must have been a production method for churning them out. Your green one sounds lovely!
