Bad link.
Why odd? Wood can be cut to almost any imagineable shape. Your pic may show an offcut from summat that was being used for a particular purpose. Possibly the new latch shown in your pics. The latch will long outlast the timber it's attached to.
Oddly, last winter I bought twenty softwood 12" x 12" x 96" timbers. These also have a similar taper to one edge. Don't know why. They were cheap and do the job well.

Only two of the six sides are parallel.
I doubt it, having struggled to drill that apparently decrepit post. Very solid indeed, and it's been there since the 1940s.
It's been there since 2002 and they haven't had it yet.

Looks like oak. I bet the bit in the ground is rotten.
