I find it is surprisingly easy to set my Samsung phone to mute by mistake. It only requires touching the wrong part of the touch screen when setting something else; in my case usually when turning wi-fi on or off.

Depending on the Android version but..... for mine, if you go to settings -> Apps & Notifications and then selection all apps and then Messages you can then set how often you get notifications. Maybe this has been inadvertently set to off or once a day or something?

Whats App, Facebook and emails are still OK.
