ISP should have already told you about these or similar. As a student your IT department should have done the same.

This worked up until a couple of days ago. It may have changed, or be different depending on whether you use .co.uk or .com versions of googlegroups.

Do not click on "reply" to reply to a posting. Click on "Options" at the top of the message, in the panel that expands click on "reply" next to the sender's name.

This should open the message in an editable box with each line of the original prefixed with >

Without removing the attribution ("xxx wrote ...") remove unneccessary verbiage of the original message and post your comments below the original message (or below and interspersed if commenting on different parts of the original message).

Then preview and send.

The first thing is not to use Google Groups for posting at all. It is an attempt at a web front end for Internet News (Usenet) and fails miserably as a means to post to it and to follow threads of messages.

It is valuable to search for previous threads and posts but that is about it.

Frankly, none of the other attempts at web front ends are much better.

The way to proceed is to get yourself a proper news reader program. Free Agent is good, and even Outlook Express will do something passable if used properly.

Then you will need access to a news server. Most ISPs run one of these included in your subscription - if you look on their support information web pages, you should find a reference to what to do if you look for "news", "internet news" or Usenet.

Failing that, you can get an account with a specialist news hosting organisation such as news.individual.net for a modest sum.

You are not on google groups you are on *Usenet*.

As a student ask your uni/school sysop how to access usenet. See Sig.
