I have an Elu (now DeWalt) 12v Combi cordless, about 12 years old.Anyways, both batteries are finally knackered.Looking for replacement batteries, I see it's going to cost me at least=A360 for a couple of cheapos, whereas a visit to B&Q this morningshowed me I could get a Makita 12v "marathon" cordless combi for =A383(including 2 x 2.0Ah batteries), a Ryobi 18v (with 2 batts) for =A363 ora MacAllister 14.4v (2 batts) for =A360.Given that I really only need my drill these days for the odd job (theextension is finished!), can anyone recommend the best course of actionand - if it involves buying a new drill - point me to a good choice?

The other course is to open up the battery and replace the cells. CPC have1600 mAh tagged sub-C cells for 1.50 each - so 15 quid a battery. However,Ni-Cads are getting harder to find.

Delivery of controllable torque is where the cordless tool wins. You get much greater smoothness of delivery with a decent speed controller on a DC drill than a universal motor one.

Whilst that is true, my first screw driving drill was/is a B&D pro mains one where the vary speed is set on a dial rather than by the trigger - and a fixed speed in reverse. 50 rpm IIRC - same as the lowest clockwise. And it's still by choice for loads of screwing like floorboards. The lack of an actual torque control or easy vary speed has never been a problem. Plus the fact it still works fine at 15 years plus old.
