More stupidness at the rubbish dump

Sep 13, 2008 30 Replies

Today I was nearly refused entry at the rubish dump for taking trade waste.

My crime was to take the 7 old radiators that I have changed in a friends house to the dumpit site.

The council workmen created a theory that I was trade because, in their words, "a DIYer cannot change all the radiators" so "I was either a plumber dumping trade waste or I was a customer dumping a plumbers trade waste."

Wankers. I could have just left the radiators in the street and they would probably have vanished by Sunday morning.

I wonder why they took note of the number plate on the car I was driving.

I bet you wouldn't have had that aggro at a scrapyard. In fact they would have probably bought you a couple of pints ;-)

Don.

But the site was less than1 mile away and who wants a garden looking like a tip?

The next time I do similar DIY I will phone someone to collect them or dump them on the street.

If I dropped 1kg of gold off would I be a gold trader and in breach of regs? Sorry mate, wrong skip that one is for silver.

Some people just don't have the sense they were born with...

I think "nearly" is the operative word here.

Well technically doesn't that make you trade?

As far as I can see in this Country you can dispose of anything as long as you are prepaired to pay for it. All this 'green' collection of domestic 'rubbish' is a con. to comply with the EU. How come bottles from pubs are trade waste and the publican has to pay for the disposal. If the Government was so concerned about recycling all the bottles would be put with the one or two that domestic householders save and wash out. Just put the lot into the main bin !and you will get no fines. If it gets too full, fill black plastic bags (sealed) and take them to the tip one by one.

In the town where I live, there is no recycling collection for Trade Waste. Surely if the Council provided separate bins for rubbish and Paper/cardboard (paid for) this would improve their recycling percentage, or are the government only concerned with the percentage of _domestic_ waste recycled? I work part time in a school in the town and we have a contract with Sita for waste and Veolia for paper/cardboard, both paid for at about the same rate. One incentive for this is thatthe pupils see that we are concerned with recycling

Trade waste goes into skips, paid for by the tradesman. It then goes to a 'waste transfer station' (recycling centre), where it is sorted into hard core (used under roads etc), soil, wood, plastics, glass, metals and all the other items that can be recycled....the end result is that only a small percentage of it goes into landfill.

I pay for my trade waste disposing of in a correct manner.

I do object to a knuckle scraping thug that looks as if he is just about to set upon a quest for fire telling me I cannot take seven radiators from a DIY job to "HIS" recycling centre and legally dispose of them.

I doubt that my letter of complaint, which will be hand delivered to the estates department on Monday morning will do much to alter the attitude or intellect such a d*****ad.

Well so do I sort of.

But we had a call from the local Council to say that if our (one and only ) secretary brings her lunch in to the office then the banana skin + yoghourt pot becomes trade waste and must be dealt with as such and they intended to send an inspector round to investigate.

By co-incidence the council has recently discontinued their coloured trade waste bag scheme and trade waste can now only be disposed of at a trade waste site and the minimum charge is FWIR £35 per vehicle.

A bit much for a banana skin.

This is the future. It will get worse.

Or given him some cash. 7 rads would weigh a bit might get a tenner for =

'em but if he has changed 7 rads there will no doubt be 14 valves and probably some copper as well. Now that is much more lucrative than iron/steel. Copper is over =A37,000 tonne, I doubt you'd get =A37/kilo b= ut 14 valves at say 250g each could well be =A315...

=A325 quid in the pocket instead of abuse form a council jobsworth.

I could take your secretary's banana skin and use it as a lubricant for the dishwasher that I wish to dispose of next week at the dumpit site. The apeman on the gate may well appreciate it considering where it will be shoved if he gives me any more lip.

I suppose having (somehow, a miraculous transformation?) become trade waste, she can't even take it home herself.

The message from Rod contains these words:

We'll end up more like some of the American cities and have waste disposal units in the sink and trash compactors, both at home and in the office.

I thought I heard/read that WDUs have only recently been allowed in New York. (I have zero knowledge of any other location in the USA.)

They're either too highly paid already or too dumb to realise how to make extra cash on the side (or both).

The last time I had a gash radiator I put it up on freecycle and had a queue of people (well, three) wanting to relieve me of it - and they collect, so I don't have to go to the bother of taking it anywhere.

She can but not without the relvant waste transfer licence but as it is "trade waste" what does she do with it? Composting the trade waste banana skin in her unapproved composter at home wouldn't be legal niether would taking the yogurt pot to the local plastics recycling bank or putting it her *domestic" waste.

The opportunity doesn't arise I paid her off. She's on JSA (benefits) now.

The office is empty and the council can, like the proverbial village idiot, whistle down their collective prick for their business rates as well.

:-))

Derek (Who has paid business rates for 20 years)
