I think the target was housebuilders where they want 'something' but want to pay the minimum possible. eg the removable faceplates are so the sparky can do first and second fix in one go, and then the decorators can splash their contract emulsion around without having to carefully mask off the sockets - just crudely mask the switch and it doesn't matter if you get paint on the body.

It was an Axiom light switch, think it was these:

They're Toolstation's basic range and I was using them in the loft where it shouldn't matter, but I should have known better.

I will now buy the better MK Logic plus and British General electrical products but avoid "cheaper" brands such as LAP from Screwfix and Axiom from Toolsatan etc.

In the past I have purchased the cheaper brands and found them a complete PITA to fit usually finding they have crap terminals for the wires. In the UK I'm not sure why any professional electrician would consider these cheaper brands. There may be the saving in the purchasing price but this has to be offset with extra time with fitting and the mental health issues associated with continually questioning why the f**k the sockets/switches are so badly designed.

Clicks Mode range, and Hagers white range are good quality items that the majority of fitters I know use. Very similar looking items, with quality terminals.
