Anyone know whether the configutaion of these is identical to the stubby ones ie can they both be charged in 1 charger?

Generally yes. One of the modern chargers will charge stick NiCd and NiMH batteries (in fact will charge just about any Makita battery).

The older chargers designed for the NiCd stick designs as supplied with things like the slightly odd "inverted L" shaped 9.6V drill driver, do not have the required contacts required to do the NiMH versions.
