Make a car exhaust system last longer by painting it with something?

My '97 E39 BMW is on its original. My brother has a newer 3 Series which has the exhaust replaced, though. And he said through rust.

I think cats are the key here. They cause much less acidic residue to be left behind when you stop. It was almost a golden rule previously that exhausts would spring a hole where the moisture pooled.

I still have the original exhaust on my car at 15 years old. My wife's car, which does short journeys, had to have a new section last year. At 13.
