I think cats are the key here. They cause much less acidic residue to be left behind when you stop. It was almost a golden rule previously that exhausts would spring a hole where the moisture pooled.
I still have the original exhaust on my car at 15 years old. My wife's car, which does short journeys, had to have a new section last year. At 13.
