Maintenance - lack of (a bit OT)

Apr 26, 2006 15 Replies

I was in the local DIY Shed today - the automatic doors were obviously in need of a bit of care and lubrication. I mentioned it to an assistant manager who told me that the store will have a refit eventually and it isn't in the branch's interest to do maintenance. Of more concern is that such items just end up as landfill and new resources are used to make replacements - yet we concern ourselves with not leaving the TV on stand-by.

Lack of maintenance causes an immense waste of resources. Our council likes to let building get run-down and then it can have a new building. Recently I saw a justification for a new building given as - "the building is poorly lit"

Local play area will soon have some playground equipment replaced because the local vandals have scraped off the powder coating. - With a bit of logic it could be re-worked.

Office at work - poorly adjusted door closer - door slams - can't get it fixed - wall gets cracked - result 3 days to fix what could have been avoided with 10 mins preventative maintenance.

Gripe aired! Any other examples? (I won't mention neglected expansion joints on motorway bridges leading to major renovation)

Nope, why not demolish the world and start again.

No. Who cares? Get over it and get a life. Oh, get some new doors, too. A drop of oil wouyldn't hurt. Cheers!

Useless.

Oh freddled gruntbuggly... ...thy micturations are to me As plurdled gabblegotchits on a lurgid bee. Groop I implore thee, My foonting turlingdromes. And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles, Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon, See if I don't!

Resistance is useless. NQV, bnunt...

Ah well - back to low energy bulbs and TV Standby concerns to save the world. (No-one seems to own an oil-can nowadays)

I'm afraiud that I don't like those things... I'd rather do without (say) a car journey, and use incandescents....

Every little helps. It's amazing how much can be re-cycled, for instance. I wish I could re-cycle polythene bags, but they seem to be refused everywhere....

I've got an old red one, and an old orange one, and a miniature one that I've lost the screw-in "bung" for, unfortunately.

What about high-pressure grease guns, or "tekalemit" ones?

Repairs are revenue, replacement is capital. So new is cheaper ... if you don't look beyond next year's Council Tax bills.

The message from Chris Bacon contains these words:

Most supermarkets have a carrierbag collection point.

ISTR that was 'tecalamet' (or something close), or am I wrong? A long time since I was involved with products from that company.

Dave

Tecalemit. There's a name from the past...

Not really. Tree down across road..phone farm manager, he brings chainsaw. I bring chainsaw. Road open. More firewood in pile.

Pothole on road outside. I scoop up a bit of MOT I and fill hole.

Telephone cable down to house. Cut offending branch, and rewire myself.

Round here we just sort stuff out and bugger authority.

If we forget to leave the bins at the gate, the guys walk 20 yards down the side of the house and drag em up.

They don't put em back tho :D

If I remember, they were very big in the auto lube systems in the sixties and the company that I used to work for then, used their various valves etc. to work with air driven machinery.

I once went for an interview for a company that used these devices for their proper use and they could not believe what I had been using them for.

I was 21 years old and full of knowledge about all the world ;-)

more convenient in the car.

Hear, hear ! Forgiveness is always easier to get than permission.

Once worked in a University and had to pass through > 20 doors on way to canteen - all squeaked due to lack of regular maintenance - nightmare. They stopped squeaking mysteriously very early one Monday when an unknown portly man in a balaclava (CCTV) sneaked around and lubricated them all (c;

Chips.

Had one of those in a hostel we were staying in when visiting Prague. Being the landing door next to our room, it didn't make for a good night's sleep. A quick tweak of the right adjusting screw and all was silent again.

"this program takes too long to run, I need a new PC" "No you don't you need t run the right program on the right kit." example: researcher wastes a month trying to analyse web logs on shiny new PC with WinXP, every 3-4 days it locks up and is rebooted. When they eventually ask me I put it on the 10 year old cast off running BSD and the job is done in a day.
