Looking for wire stripper for thin electronics wire (2023 Update)

I have a couple of 'automatic' wire strippers that work well on T&E and mains flexible cable but they don't work so well on thin electronics wire, especially multi-strand where the individual strands are very fine.

Does anyone have any recommendations for strippers for thin flex and individual wires of ribbon cable and such?

My front teeth are ever so slightly (not so you'd notice) jagged and work perfectly for this.

If its PVC use a soldering iron.

That makes a right old mess of both wire and soldering iron in my experience.

If you only have to do a handful then I find a boxcutter and a steady hand together with precision wire cutters adequate.

More than that and I go looking for my adjustable wire strippers which will go down to all but the thinnest of multicore wires. I suspect they would do finer wire if they were not so badly worn. They don't seem to make them like mine any more with manual size adjustment.

Anything thinner like wire wrap wire and the tools usually have a stripper built in.

Ribbon wire there is specific tool for, but the whole point of using ribbon wire is to use punch down multiway connectors with it.

I've got some that were purchased many years ago when we were doing a lot of RS232 cabling and are strip very delicately. They look quite similar to:

Nonsense, turn the temperature down.

Yes, normally that's what would happen but in this case I have to connect a random sort of cross connection of wires between a SIL and a DIL header. Easy multiway connector one end, by hand the other.

Thanks for the other ideas. I do have a 'manual adjustable' stripper, I'll dig it out and set it up for the wire size I'm using.

Thanks, I'd seen some like those, if they're good I might try them.

I find that using the non-bevelled side of sharp fine bladed cutters gives good results on most fine wires.

we use these for the students in the lab they are OK for our standard wires which include 1/0.6 single core 7/0.2 stranded and 16/0.2 stranded .

I don't find them too good for fine wire especially if the insulation is soft or something like PTFE.

An observation, the stripping jaws show in that link are cast metal which work well. There are "identical" look alike strippers but with one minor difference in that the stripping jaws are a miniature razor blade inserts and in my experience these do not work as well as the ones with cast metal jaws (at least on mains T&E).

Although I don't own another type I have used others in the past that worked well on small wire. They all had a similar idea. A hole for the size of the core and the edge of the whole was the 360 degree cutter to cut fully around the insulation. They all had a a series of such cutter/holes for different wires.

Best ones will have jaws for the individual cable sizes.

That's almost exactly like one I already have, in fact I tend to regard it as my 'best' one. They're not so good in confined spaces though.

Probably not what you want, but: The best wire strippers I have ever used are (Swiss) made by EREM. I have a pair something like this (link), which are fantastic for stripping 'wire wrapping wire', very thin, high quality wire with a kynar insulation. You can do a lot of good fine electronic work with a pair of these.

I'm happy with these

they cope with 0.8 to 2.6mm wires, if you want smaller then these

are for 0.25 to 0.8mm wires

I think the smaller ones might be what I'm after, thanks Andy.
