And if halogens might have exceeded the rating - some dimmers are rated for GLS types, and require you to reduce the load for other types. Check the instructions.

Some can. My replacements have been flawless, although the trips go 70-% of te time if a bulb goes (40W candles)
I don't think the diacs go at all. Its simply the triacs. You need a 15A rated one probably.

The dimmers did blow even with just a single bulb going phut.
The replacements have not.
The issue is micro hot spots in the semiconductors: You need to make sure the MCB blows before the Triac does when the candles go arcy. a GOOD 400W dimmer seems to cope.
