Light fitting wiring

Hi,

I want to change the light rose in my dining room to a new all in one chrome light fitting.

Having examined the ceiling rose, there are three sets of cable attached to the ceiling rose (brown, blue and green/yellow), one of which has a small amount of masking tape on it. The light can be switched on & off from two different switches.

The fitting I want to replace the existing light with allows for three wires to be connected via a chocolate box connector.

So how do I connect the new fitting to the nine cables?

TIA

Looks like you're not competant to do this otherwise you wouldn't need to ask, but... There's the correct way and the cowboy way.

The correct way is to take the floorboard up in the room above near to the cieling rose and put the cables into a junction box then a single feed to the light down stairs.

Nah! I won't mention the cowboy way cos I wouldn't do it like that meself.

Granted !

Interesting, as the wiring has just all been redone, and was done by a competent electrician to the current standards (apparently), and it was left as I described previously.

Anyway this seems to cover it

There's nothing wrong (in principle) with the way it was wired previously; that's the normal way to wire a ceiling rose. It's only if you want a trendy-type fitting, like the one you've bought, that you have to do things differently.

(One reason for the "ceiling rose" method of wiring being better than what you'll end up with is that all the wiring connections are accessible from below the ceiling, so if ever a wiring problem develops there's no need to immediately start ripping up floorboards upstairs to check the connections inside junction boxes).

I take it then that using a 2nd chocolate box to handle the switch cable is a no-no then ?

espeically as there is a new laminate floor layed on top of it :(

So can you get a larger choccy block in the light fixing base? if not do it the cowboy way and tape the large choccy block and push it into the ceiling.

yeah, its a big base so that sounds a plan, thanks :)

The incompetent way would be to go ahead and make changes while not understanding what you were doing. Asking questions first however seems like a good indication of competence.

More correctly there are a number of ways, some better than others.

This is one way certainly, however it is not appropriate to call it "the correct way"

Replacing the three connection bit of chockie block on the new fitting with a four connection bit (so you have a spare connection point to common the unswitched lives) would also be perfectly acceptable solution involving a good degree less upheaval.

Thats providing you have room in the base.

Next!
