Cheap ones appear to measure distance ultra-sonically - the laser simply being a pointer which plays no part in the measurement.
But do the expensive ones actually use the laser to make the measurement & if so, how?

Yes, my DLE-40 uses modulation of the laser and phase comparison of the reflection, I presume most of the DIY class ones (that aren't ultrasonic) do the same, somebody tore one down ...
