Lake & Elliot Bottle Jack

Clearing out my Fathers garage I came across a Lake & Elliot S142 6 Ton Hydraulic Bottle Jack.

I remember using this when I worked on my Triumph Herald and various Cortina's back in mid 70's

All parts of the jack are moving OK .. but not 'pumping' up ...... it is low on fluid.

Is it worth me investing in Hydraulic Jack oil ..... or are seals likely to be shot by now on a jack that was probably made in 1950s I found a link to a site that sells seals ... but at >£35 certainly not going to be buying any.

or should I just scrap it.

I don?t use bottle jacks anymore, essentially because modern cars are rather lower to the ground and a trolley jack is more convenient to use.

Scrounge a bit of hydraulic oil from the nearest farm. Tell them you are happy to continue eating their eggs and beef.

There are hydraulic seal suppliers about. Take the originals along and ask for something to match.

I have a little Eversure jack from about 1965, one of these

Mine still pumps up OK. If you're going to scrap yours, why not top it up with a little gear oil - you've nothing to lose.

ATF or similar will be ok for a jack, at least for testing it.

Hydraulic fluid is oil. Any non-plant oil can work.

I don't know what type of seals yours has. Rubber, fibre washers & flat gaskets are easily made or substituted.

I'd guess it would cost me a lot more in petrol to get to my nearest farm than the oil costs at Halfords?

Maybe, but we don't all live close to Halfords either. :-)

nearest

Aye, I'd wander 50 yds across the road when a local farmer is at his shed and cadge a bit of hyrdraulic fluid. Other wise it'd be a 50 mile round trip to Halfords. B-)

And even if you did, a local motor factor would undercut Halfords prices easily.

Rather surprising to find someone with your technical expertise so ready to believe U tube videos from obscure sources.

We will see ... ;-)

Ok, can we just clarify some points and simple yes/no answers will do (for me). ;-)

Do animals die for us to eat, often very young? Yes/No

Are animals exploited in say the dairy industry for us to consume something that was never destined for us (milk)? Yes/No.

Are said exploited animals generally slaughtered at about 1/5th of their natural lives? Yes/No.

Are the children of these animals often killed at birth but always taken away from their mothers in any case (even if after a few days) Yes / No.

Are pig stunned (/killed?) using carbon dioxide which burns their eyes, throats and lungs? Yes/No.

Is the following video correct (even if only mainly for the USA)? Yes/No

Do you agree with the BDA and ADA, many health groups and specialists that state consuming animal based products are generally bad for us and we can live good and healthy lives on a plant based diet? Yes/No.

Do you agree that a large proportion of the methane in our atmosphere comes from Livestock? Yes/No.

Do you agree that animal waste is getting into the rivers, estuaries and the sea and polluting them? Yes/No.

Do you think we have the right to kill any animals we choose and for what ever reason, even when there is no *need*? Yes/No.

Is the following correct re cattle and GHG production?

Is this true?

Decisions decision; shall I ignore the subthread for raging off the subject topic, killfile on just this group or killfile on this and other groups we might frequent?

I don't intend to respond further:-)

Ideally you need a killfile that operates on subthreads.

Slightly hypocritical given you were the one to introduce 'eggs and beef' into a jack topic? Complete coincidence (especially if it's an arable farmer)?

Well, given your e-mail address I'm guessing you may have (or had) some sort of farming interest / connection so I'm guessing just ignoring any topic covering animal cruelty and exploitation (even when introduced into a thread by a farmer), killing any such thread might be most convenient for you? <shrug>

You needed have responded as you did in the first place (and not for the first time) then?

See, I 'get' you have lived most of your live in / around 'farming' and so likely to want to defend something you have already stated as 'legitimate' (that I have never questioned) and may have even been considered moral, because of necessity at some point in human existence. That isn't the case for a vast majority of the population and like it or not, this is the way the world is going 'now'.

So, just as I was seen by an unreasonable minority when I stood up for myself re not wanting to be in / around other people smoking by not going to pubs, cinemas, parties etc where smoking was allowed and likely and did support those progressive venues where non-smokers were given equal rights, the right to *not* have to breathe other peoples smoke.

I am in the same position now by supporting those innocent creatures that are being killed just because 'people choose to eat their flesh' and as with smoking, getting those doing it to realise their choices create victims, who initially didn't have the choice (without a cost to themselves) but after raising the issue, now do.

So, if you don't want to hear that message here, may I suggest you stop provoking it or better still, start supporting it (even if only for your own health benefits). ;-)

That's not true. Man has evolved to produce Lactase in late childhood and/or adulthood that can digest Lactose.

Stop spouting ignorance. You seem utterly jealous that some of us enjoy milk. Whether it's on our cereal or in our coffee. At least we don't add to the demand for Soy production clearing large swathes of Amazonian jungle at the demand of our loved ones.

You seem happy yourself to consume eggs, albeit for medical reasons.

What would you do to those male chick that would be either macerated or gassed?
