Is there anything left in Maplins?

They seem to malfunction due to water or dodgy connections and I'm not sure why they get removed or installed at particular stops. They indicate how long until the next bus in mins, which might not be very accurate as it depends on speed and traffic but it's a reasonable guide I t hink they take the times from the same data as the phone apps do.

They still have one at stepney green station, the only one they have. They can;t indicate any problems either and for some reason even the 'tanno y' can;t report that the line is out it seems.

Yes that is true but it's not the norm, they only annouce such things rarel y. It's a far bigger problem on the buses as destination often change and you have to get off and changes buses, getting the next one, if you're lucky.

I've only noticed such a thing last a day or so.

A reasonable Q , but maybe they don't know it's incorrect until passengers tell them ;-)

I normaly just look out of the window or observe what others are doing, som etimes I listen to what people are saying on the phone conversations, they can be funny.

That would make sense, although on some stations the messages while they ca n be heard are difficult to understand.

Handy for those new to the area I suppose. Might be handy too for those tha t might not understand how to prounounce certain names of places. I can usualy ignore them, but sometimes you get a bus that is not from the area and it announces stops that arent where it;s stopping.

Is that just the audio or the rotating message display too ?

If they annoy peolpe on their mobiles then I'd say turn the announcements U P.

Not really. Even someone who doesn't speak English well can learn to recognise what their destination sounds like in a foreign language. Most of us manage it when abroad.

I'm very happy to watch the world go by when travelling. Something you can't really do when driving. I don't need to distract myself by reading or using a mobile phone.

Which is why I prefer using a bus or overground train to the tube. And why I think tube drivers deserve every penny they're paid for doing such a boring job.

But they already know the indicator boards "may" be incorrect. Thats why they put up *Printed Notices* to that affect.

Printed Notices mark you, not ad-hoc notices scribbled in marker.

So what's the point of powering up the indicator boards if there's no way of knowing whether the information is correct or not ?

The reason, as with the bus and train announcements is that its all done for the sake of appearence; rather than because its of any practical use.

A station platform with a nice indicator board with bright orange lettering on it looks *nicer* than one with the lettering switched off. The fact that the information is maybe wrong is purely secondary.

Indeed, any problems I've had, I get money back. Even an LED light whic= h failed after 9 months was replaced without question. No photo require= d, nothing to be sent back, just another appeared in the post. I bought= some crockery for =A310 each and one was slightly cracked in the post, = I photographed it and he sent me another. Still using the cracked one.

Usually pretty easy to pick the quality stuff from feedback, photos, pri= ce, etc. Or buy a known make.

And if I can get a lead or adapter for =A32 instead of =A310, I'd have t= o have 5 faulty ones before it cost me money.

I've never seen these printed notices, I've heard the statement over the ta nnoy never seen a printed notice.

Not seen them either.

Because you might what to know what is running, for instance at Mile End th e hammersmith line might be out but NOT the district line and they share th e same notice board. The fact that the next train might only go half way or it might go the whole journey is more useful than a blank notice board whi ch will tell you nothing.

When reported I find it useful. What I don't find useful is notice boards w ith NOTHING on them.

Blind passengers can't read notices that say this indicator board might be wrong, either.

But if the passenger has no way of knowing this, what's the point ?

If there wasn't good reason to think otherwise one might be almost led to believe that you worked for London Underground yourself. Possibly in the planning dept.

On the Underground I believe where necessary blind passengers are entitled to assistance from a member of the station staff. Although quite possibly on regular journeys others rely on information and help from fellow passengers.

Then point is knowing whether or not you are on the right platform, the only reason to turn it off is when NO trains are running and they won't be running for the forseable future, such as christmas day.

No I just use it everyday so for me seeing such notices can be important. See wqhen I get on at leyton and will get off at Mile end I couldn't give a f*ck whether the train goes to ealing broadway or west ruislip. I don't care that the train is showing the wrong destination couldn't give a f*ck. The train may stop at liver[pool street because there's a problem further up the line, so NO train will go beyond liverpool street. You see the indicator boards can only tell you the final destination and the time until it's expected to reach the station you're waiting at.

Pull the other one you'll be lucky to find a memeber of staff on most platforms.

I have encountered cases where the driver turns of the engine ubtil the space is cleared which usually means that the offenders incur the wrath of all the other pasengers.

Signs on buses in Lincolnshire categorically state that it is illegal not to give up the space if required.

TfL, for some reason, refused to do that in London.

No - the DO fold except that they are used as 5 cwt freight carriers with the baby stuck on top!

They have to be emptied to fold.

I must admit that I do miss London's frequent services until late at night - I rarely used the night buses but they were there if I needed them. I do have an evening service now that I'm out in the sticks - 4 miles from Lincoln - but it is only once an hour after about 6pm with the last bus home at 2300.

There are, however, quite a lot of places outside London with lots of terraced housing and no off street parking. The opposite side of this road is terraced housing and, although we have off street parking on this side of what is quite a narrow road, the row of parked cars opposite makes it a bit tricky gerting in and out at times.

It has nothing to do with local council policy. It's a Westminster/Whitehall decision which the local coucil is powerless to stop..
