Induction hob question

There are two stainless steel vessels that sit alternately on my induction hob. A coffee pot and a saucepan. For some reason they both have slightly convex bottoms. I'm prepared to try to beat them into shape if necessary, but not sure if it's worth the risk of making matters worse. My question is: Does the hob only expend heat energy where the pots meet the hotplate or does the whole hotplate produce a lot of wasted heat under these conditions?

It's the pan that's heated by induced electric currents, not the "hot"plate. It may heat the pan less, but I don't think the efficiency will change much.

Our hob came with a magnetic control knob which, when lifted off, can be used to test the suitability of pans. If it sticks to the base of a pan, it's ok - otherwise not.
